Dentistry Awards 2009: the launch

The Dentistry Awards is the most prestigious event in the dental calendar, celebrating regional – and national – excellence in dentistry.

The awards have been created to recognise outstanding individuals, teams and practices who have an active interest in staying at the top of the profession.

Because they are regional, they give practices the chance to prove just how fabulous they are; not just against other UK practices but their very own competition.

New categories
2009 sees the return of last year's successful new category, the UK Outstanding Achievement Award. It also sees the extension of the Website Awards. From your suggestions from last year, we have added an extra category this year – Best Marketing.

There are more than 40 coveted awards, and everyone who takes one away can be proud that they have set a new benchmark of dental excellence.

The categories:
• Best Practice
• Best Young Dentist
• Best Team
• Best Marketing.

Plus:
• The UK Outstanding Achievement Award.

The Dentistry.co.uk Website Awards
• Best Website
• Best New Website
• Most Improved Website
• Best Specialist Referral Website.

The regions:
• Scotland
• Northern Ireland
• North West
• North East
• Midlands
• East
• London
• South West & Wales
• South East.

It's well worth getting your entry for the main awards (Best Practice, Young Dentist, Team, Marketing, and Outstanding Achievement) in sooner rather than later – the ‘early bird' entry price for doing so before 26 June is only £35. Full details can be found online at www.dentistry.co.uk/awards2009, along with the official video of last year's ceremony.

Entering the website awards couldn't be easier – simply visit www.dentistry.co.uk/webawards. The web categories only cost £15 to enter.

Why you should enter
The Dentistry Awards are an ideal way to motivate your practice to strive above the competition.

Be recognised for providing an excellence service, enjoy a great team building experience, and generate some excitement in your practice while you do so!

Success at the awards can improve team morale too – recognition really boosts confidence. What better way to reward your team and show them you recognise their hard work?

It's a great way to get press coverage for your practice too – even being short-listed is a massive achievement, after all.

Simply choose all of the categories you wish to enter and produce an entry to impress. Remember, you're potentially competing against the whole of the UK, so include as much information as possible.

The final deadline is 11 September, leaving plenty of time to create a fantastic entry.

The Awards ceremony will be held on Friday 4 December in the stunning Athena, Leicester – a beautiful art-deco cinema that is now a state-of-the-art banqueting venue in the heart of the country.

One of the most glamorous dentistry events of the year, the evening consists of a champagne reception and three-course dinner before the awards ceremony, hosted by a celebrity compere. The evening continues after the awards with music guaranteed to have you dancing into the early hours!

Category guidelines
Best Practice
We are looking for extra special practices that can prove they are the best in their region. From small practices to large specialist surgerys, each entry will be judged on its individual merits. Clinical excellence backed up with patient testimonials.

Let us know how your practice has improved, how the team works together. Inform us about charity or community work your practice is involved with and what you are most proud of, and then let us help you put your practice's name on the map!

Best Team
Tell us how your team will go that extra mile for the patients and practice. Show us testimonials from satisfied patients and proof of how exceptional every single person in your team really is. Let us know how hard they work to make your team great, exactly what makes them so special, and then let us help you tell everyone in your region all about it.

Best Young Dentist
This award is aimed at dentists of 35 years and under (on 4 December 2009) who have achieved a standard of practice management seemingly beyond their experience, or who have achieved notable things at this early stage of their career.

We are looking for people who deserve recognition: this could be someone who has continued to train since graduating and who achieved phenomenal results as a VDP; young dentists involved in community projects or who have championed a scheme local to their practice. Someone whose achievements are down to hard work and determination – or who has had to overcome extreme or adverse circumstances in order to create a successful practice.

Best Marketing
Are you particularly proud of a recent marketing campaign? Has it delivered measurable growth
for your practice? Tell us about your practice's unique selling point and how you have marketed and differentiated yourself. We are looking for evidence of integrated marketing campaigns, branding and new ideas that have generated growth at your practice.

The UK Outstanding Achievement Award
Unlike the Oscars or National TV Awards, our outstanding achievement award is not for longevity, but for performance during the calendar year 2009. It will go to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution during the calendar year. It is not necessary to have worked in UK dentistry for a lifetime to be nominated for this award.

The Website Awards
We know exactly how much hard work goes into producing a top-class site.
The Dentistry.co.uk Website Awards give you the chance to have that hard graft
officially rewarded across three categories: private, mixed, and specialist. To enter please visit www.dentistry.co.uk/webawards.

For more information or to enter, visit the official website at www.dentistry.co.uk/awards2009, call 01923 851 734, or email elisa.allen@fmc.co.uk.

Hints & tips
• A personal statement of 500 words outlining why you feel you deserve to win the category must accompany your entry
• Think of your entry as a means of presenting you as well as your
practice: bound booklets, laminated pictures and practice marketing
material will all help the judges get a feel for your practice
• Letters of reference and testimonials from patients can back up your entry
• Patient testimonials can be backed up by before and after shots
• Creativity and originality help applications stand out
• Press cuttings are a great way to prove your work within your community
• Ensure you include high-quality professional pictures of your practice – either hard copies or on CD
