Dentists flock to workshop

Dentists, dental nurses, hygienists and receptionists flocked to the first of a series of four workshops last month to learn the secrets of running a thriving business.

Organised by dental coach guru Chris Barrow, Construct a powerful three-year vision & plan the time to plan tackled the fundamental do’s and don’ts of practice management.

Beginning with the nuts and bolts of tackling low self-esteem, Chris backed up his philosophy with facts and surveys.

The three conditions

‘The true success of running a business is down to three conditions; you love what you do, you love when you do it and you love the people you get to do the work with,’ said Chris.
Dentistry is now a retail business, he continued. ‘Most dentists think they need to understand more about teeth to have a better practice, but it’s 98% practice and 2% clinical skills that make the difference.’

Participants were urged to create their three-year visions, and to ask themselves questions on an annual basis. ‘If we were meeting here in three years time, looking back over the 36 months, what would have to have happened, both personally and professionally, for you to be happy with your progress?’ asked Chris, adding that this is the question dentists need to ask themselves every year for the rest of their lives.

After agreeing a vision, it can be broken down into 90-day goals, explained Chris, ‘but it’s continual work in progress.’
Free, Focus and Buffer days were next. ‘If you run a business there are only three types of days in your life; a free day, a focus on the business day, and a work in your business day.
‘You ought to work three days a week on clinical, one day on your business and then go home – by the time you’ve done that you’re burnt out and it can’t be done any other way,’ he stressed.

Peak profitability

Armed with statistics, Chris argued his point clearly; ‘It’s been statistically proven you will make more money if you reduce your hours – peak profitability is 24-27 hours a week, and if your waiting list gets longer, put your prices up.’

The business can only grow when you are not with your customers, and when you are with your team talking about it, added Chris.
He also reinforced the importance of holidays. ‘I recommend you take at least eight weeks holiday a year, because this is essential when you’re self-employed – the fewer hours you do the more profitable you become.’

The importance of meetings was addressed next.

‘I recommend you have a daily huddle, a weekly meeting and a half day meeting with all your team. ‘Your team will work well for you if they know you care for them, but there must be an agenda for every single meeting.’ He continued: ‘There is no performance without accountability, and there’s no accountability without
measurement; without this you drift, and people get demotivated when they’re lost.’

Dipping sheep

Referring to dental school training, Chris was honest: ‘In schools it’s a sophisticated sheep dip where you’ve got to keep dipping sheep. In the new contract you’ll have to see a patient every six minutes if you want to make a living.’

After handing out the homework, Chris concluded: ‘How much more tired/stressed are you going to get before you do this? How much bad behaviour from clients are you going to put up with, and how much more contract negotiation are you going to take from people who don’t give a damn?’

Massive benefits

Commenting on the day, dentist Tim Thakrah said: ‘I have used Chris to help me run my dental business now for three years, and I have seen the massive benefits for all the dentists who have attended the courses, in many areas of their practices.

This includes happier dental teams, improved profitability, more time off, less stress for the dentist and their teams, and an improved customer journey for their patients.

‘I cannot see how any dentist in the UK would not massively benefit from attending regardless of the type of practice they work in from NHS, mixed, private to specialist referral practices.’
