Bringing the dental trade up to date

The BDTA's annual Midwinter Meeting was held this year at the elegant location of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, one of the world's leading surgical institutions, on 9 December 2010.

As in previous years, the event attracted many representatives from across the dental industry, who were interested in the business and social programme offered at the event.

After gathering for refreshments in the Edward Lumley Hall, delegates were welcomed to the meeting, and given an update on the BDTA by president Ed Attenborough.

Ed highlighted the achievements of each of the BDTA working groups and explained that the activities had been geared towards growing the industry and strengthening the benefits of buying from BDTA members in the minds of the dental team.

Alex Baylis, from the Care Quality Commission, presented an overview of the registration of primary dental care providers which is to be completed by April 2011, and the impact this will have on practices across the country.

Representatives from the Association of British Healthcare Industries offered an update on the Association's current strategies, activities, connections and its working group on Primary Care Trust commissioning.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency's chief executive, Jonathan Plumb, summarized how it's investigations of incidents involving medical tools helps in the improvement their safety and efficiency.

Delegates then made their way to the library for a drinks reception preceding a delicious three-course lunch.

The delegates agreed that the day was thoroughly enjoyable and informative, located within a prestigious building, with good food, and fine company.

Tony Reed, executive director at the BDTA, says: 'The Midwinter Meeting is always a beneficial event for BDTA members, as it offers the opportunity for delegates from a wide range of businesses to get up to speed with the regulatory and business issues affecting the day to day running of their organisation.  The networking opportunity and the chance to develop new business contacts is also valuable to members, particularly in the current climate.'
