Lord Howe in hot seat at dental conference

Lord Howe, parliamentary under secretary of state for quality at the Department of Health, will address delegates on the morning of the first day of the BDA's British Dental Conference and Exhibition.

The conference takes place Thursday 19-Saturday 21 May and delegates at the event – which is expected to attract 4,000-plus visitors – will have the opportunity to question the minister about the government's plans for reform.

The conference and exhibition is aimed at everyone in the dental profession representing the perfect opportunity to connect with the profession, meet peers and be inspired.

Top dental speakers will come together at the Manchester Central Convention Complex for 'one of the most interesting and inspiring conference programmes yet'.

Conference sessions include:
• Richard Simonsen, of Midwestern University Arizona, US, will discuss the ethics of aesthetic and minimally invasive dentistry
• Raymond Bertolotti, of the University of California, will deliver two much anticipated sessions on Friday 20 May entitled Think adhesion, not tooth reduction and also Quest for the best ‘universal' bonding agent
• Paul Lambrechts, from Leuven University Dental School, Leuven, Belgium, will get technical on Saturday 21 May by discussing the requirements for durability in composites, techniques for long-lasting posterior composites and how to assess restorations for clinical performance.

In addition to dentists, dental care professionals are exceptionally well catered for at the event with sessions both within the conference and the exhibition.

New for this year is the DCP theatre located within the exhibition hall.

Sponsored by Oral-B, this area will provide 32 mini lectures and is free for all DCPs registered to attend. Each session lasts for 30 minutes and qualifies for verifiable CPD.

DCP theatre sessions include:
• Philip Bellamy, a principal researcher at Oral-B, who will discuss how to measure plaque changes objectively and will take a look at some of the recent research on plaque biofilms
• Vesna Zivojinovic-Toumba, from the University of Belgrade, who will be explaining how to integrate prevention into daily practice through a better understanding of patient's needs and keeping them motivated.

There will also be an update on how best to deal with medical emergencies in the practice as well as an overview on tooth whitening, designed to bring you up to speed on the processes and legal implications.

Exhibition
Taking place in the Central Hall, the exhibition will feature 100-plus dental companies, including all the major brands and suppliers.

The exhibition is going to be very exciting as it sees the launch of some brand new products for the dental market – be one of the first to test them out and take samples back to your practice.

The exhibition is free to attend and is suitable for all members of the dental team.

Register for your ticket at www.bda.org/conference.

The event also has a wide range of social events.

Celebrate the opening day of conference with a complimentary drink and make the most of visiting the exhibition stands.

On the Friday night, the party is being held at Tiger Tiger. For VDPs, there is also the VDP ball at the Palace Hotel and, on the Saturday evening, the Conference dinner at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel.

There are still tickets left for this year's British Dental Conference and Exhibition, but book now to avoid disappointment.

Choose from more than 80 lectures across the three days and over 85 hours of verifiable CPD.

To book either for the either the full event or just the exhibition, visit www.bda.org/conference or call 0870 166 6625.
