The Result!

1. Kevin Lewis

For the second year running Kevin Lewis comes out on top. Many people selected him as their number one choice but he was also there or thereabouts in many others’ top 10 lists, proving the significant spread of his influence throughout the profession.
Kevin is well known for his vibrant, sharp and iconic writing style where he gives his unique wisdom on the current state of UK dentistry. During his 20 years in full-time general practice, he developed special interests in preventive dentistry and dental practice management. He has written two textbooks on practice management, contributed to CD training programmes on infection control and is dental director of Dental Protection, where he has been since 1989. Kevin is a popular speaker, lecturing globally on a variety of issues, and in 2003 was appointed a member of the Council of the Medical Protection Society. In 2006 he became a regular contributor to Dentistry magazine, for which he writes a popular monthly column.

2. Michael Wise
A specialist in surgical and restorative dentistry and a visiting professor at the Eastman Dental Institute, Michael has a private restorative practice in London. He’s a member of many professional societies, including the American Academies of Restorative Dentistry and Fixed Prosthodontics, and has lectured widely both on a national and international scale. Michael qualified in 1968 from the London Hospital Dental School and in 1972 obtained a Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons. Since 1977 he has run postgraduate courses in his practice while he is also the author of many publications and handbooks. Having scored a very high position in this poll for the second year running, it’s easy to see how widespread his influence undoubtedly is.

3. Edward Lynch
Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Gerodontolgy at Queen's University, Belfast, as well as consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the Royal Hospital, the scale of Edward’s influence sees him into the top five. During his illustrious academic career, Ed has supervised many postgraduate students and has been awarded plenty of prizes for his research. A specialist in three disciplines – endodontics, prosthodontics and restorative dentistry – he presents more than 50 postgraduate courses worldwide each year. He has served as senior lecturer in Conservative Dentistry, honorary consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Postgraduate Course Organiser for the University of London. He has been awarded 94 research grants, totaling more than £6 million. Edward is on the editorial board of numerous international journals having spent many years treating specialist referrals. He is also chairman of the European Experts group on tooth whitening and has been awarded several patents for the management of caries using Ozone. As he says himself: ‘I am convinced that promotion of better health for people is best served by research, for which I want to further collaborative efforts and to encourage more new young enthusiastic researchers.’
