Oasis battle rages on

More than two thirds of GDPs working for Oasis are still refusing to sign the company’s new contract. This news follows our last report in April, when the contract was first rolled out.

Speaking again to Dentistry magazine, one Oasis dentist said: ‘The major issue is the hygienist’s “referral fee”, which has been totally removed from the new contract - I would have been £1,153 worse off this month under the new contract.

‘They keep calling it a “referral fee” - it’s not. We see this as responsibility/management fee.’

But Pat Langley, clinical director for Oasis told a different story. She said: ‘Yes they are unhappy about the absence of the referral fee, but it is money they should not have received in the first place.

‘There are dentists working with us who have never received a referral fee but our hygienist practice is now running at a loss.’

Asked how many dentists are unhappy with the terms, Langley said: ‘We know that there is a small group of dentists who claim to
represent a number of others, but instead of solving any outstanding issues, the group is creating an environment of anxiety, and potentially jeopardising the future of the dentists they seek to represent.’ Asked why, she said: ‘Since issuing the new contracts, a number of associates have come to us with genuine concerns and many of them are related to the removal of the hygienist referral fee.’ One clause causing controversy includes keeping the practice clean and tidy - ‘isn’t that reasonable?’ asked Langley.

Our informer thought not. He said: ‘We are not cleaners, but we will happily ensure that this is seen to – also, if we are ill for more than three months in any 12 months, our contracts will be terminated, and this is unacceptable.’

On whether he agreed if it was all down to a handful of ‘disruptive dentists causing trouble amongst the majority,’ he said: ‘She would say that wouldn’t she, but I know today that there are 123 of us who are not happy with it.

‘One colleague said to me only yesterday: “I will not be signing it and I’m leaving no matter what happens.” ’

Langley said: ‘We have given a great deal of thought to these concerns, and we wrote to all our associates last week to let them know that we have made a number of changes to accommodate these issues.’

Our informer said: ‘We have a meeting with our solicitor this week. We don't want Oasis to go bust, we want an agreement that is fair to both sides. This contract puts all the liabilities on the dentists and gives all dictatorial power to Oasis.’
