Seeing is believing

Halfway through another fairly busy morning, Debbie, my front of house lady, sashays into my surgery to inform me that there is a ‘rep fellow from Nuview Limited here’. He wonders if I would like to try some new ‘dentist vision thing for free’. That was it, the magic word (free) had been spoken and, like 90% of all the practitioners I know, I agreed to see him a little later during lunchtime.

He duly arrived and we sat down to discuss loupes. Thoughts of lunch were uppermost in my mind, but I agreed to have a trial pair of Zeiss K prismatic loupes on loan for a no commitment one-week trial.

Steve Clapman, the Nuview representative, told me to call him when they arrived so he could set them up properly. The man was as good as his word. About a week later, the loupes arrived, and Steve came back and spent about three minutes setting them up. He told me to call if I had any problems and soon enough I was left alone with my new trial toy.

Over the years I have heard many lecturers say that every dentist over 40 should use magnification. As a 46-year-old who keeps fit and only needs glasses for protection and motorway driving, I didn’t think this advice applied to me. Boy, was I wrong.

The loupes were slightly heavy but comfortable and there was what I could only describe as a ‘bifocal’ feel to them.
The magnified field of view seemed quite large and passed instruments and materials seemed to loom up out of nowhere. This minor phenomena was the only downside I found to working with the loupes.
The only way I can describe the gain involved is that it is similar to the giant jump in visual access achieved by using fibre-optic hand pieces, or the odd patient who seems to have the proverbial flip top head.

Steve advised me to initially only use them for the more complex procedures, such as crown and bridge preparations. After the week trial period,
I felt a continuous in-surgery trial was in order. So I started my ‘second career’ in dentistry being able to see what I was doing and what was going on at the back of the mouth.
With magnification and the telescopic effect, I can now see down boxes as they are being cut, visualise areas of calculus sub-gingivally and easily find and negotiate those mythical extra root canals that are there but only on paper.

Other less obvious visual improvements with magnification are using them to look at radiographs on the viewer, trimming the margins of temporary crowns and bridges accurately and checking over laboratory work. There are probably many other uses but I am still on my voyage of discovery.

My practice is single-handed and most adults are treated on an independent/private basis. Children are seen on the NHS and the best comment yet about my new head gear came from a eight-year-old boy who was obviously fascinated by the Zeiss loupes in the up position. He said: ‘Mum, why has he got antlers?’ I assured him that they grew in the spring and are shed in the autumn!

His mother then said: ‘Next time we come to see Mr Meeson, they will be bigger and even more wonderful.’

After 20-odd years in practice there have been few new advances that in actuality live up to the hype. Magnification is one I wholeheartedly recommend to all dental practitioners to try, and I advise you to take advantage of the free trial period being offered by Nuview Limited.

What have you got to lose? Nothing – apart from a
sizeable investment when you realise after a week that things are so much more difficult without them.
