Salaried dentists receive a boost

Salaried dentists are to benefit from career development and pay review, said the Health Minister at The Lister Centre in South London last week.

Speaking face-to-face with salaried dentists, Rosie Winterton said that the consultation responses supported proposals for reviewing pay as well as terms and conditions to support their careers.

The proposals include: designing career paths that acknowledge, develop and reward salaried primary care generalists, supporting the development of dentists with special interests through a clear framework of development and reward within the general career path, and recognising and remunerating primary care-based specialists and trainees in specialities recognised by the General Dental Council (GDC) as their hospital-based counterparts.

The consultation, Creating the Future – Modernising careers for Salaried Dentists in Primary Care, followed a review of salaried dentistry, which involved the British Dental Association (BDA), patient representatives and NHS management.

NHS employers have been asked to work with the BDA, to agree the new terms and conditions for salaried dentists, that will support career modernisation and high-quality patient care, and increase the amount invested in salaried dentists’ pay by up to 10%.

The new reforms will be linked to General Dental Council (GDC) requirements, and become a key part of the new arrangements.

The news was welcomed by the BDA. Janet Clarke, Chair of the BDA’s central committee for community and public health dentistry, said: ‘Dentists working in the salaried services are dedicated and highly skilled professionals who provide care for the most vulnerable people in our society. It’s therefore right that the Department is recognising their contribution today, and we look forward to this recognition being translated into real changes to support and encourage dentists working in this crucial area.’

Dr Liana Zoitopoulos, consultant, senior lecturer, and Head of Community Special Care Dentistry for King’s College London Dental
Institute, who attended the centre on the day of the announcement, was delighted. She said: ‘We are very pleased with the announcement, and are delighted to have the minister’s support with the development of salaried services. It was also very pertinent that the launch took place in the Department of Community Special Care dentistry within Lambeth Southwark and Lewisham. We believe that recruitment and retention in the salaried service can only be achieved through a commitment in training and rewarding staff to provide care to the highest standards.’

Winterton said: ‘Salaried dentists have a long and
important tradition as an essential part of the overall provision of dentistry in this country, looking particularly after the dental needs of children and vulnerable groups, including those with special needs.’
