New implant group

The British Society of Oral Implantology has been launched to provide a structure that experienced and aspiring implantologists can use to show to the profession and patients their level of achievement. It also aims to develop their education in this exciting field.

The subject of dental implantology has grown enormously in popularity over the past few years. There are increasingly more practitioners aiming to introduce implant treatments to their practice routine.

A dental publication cannot go to press without at least some reference to the subject, and in most instances there will be a plethora of adverts relating to implant courses, systems
and materials.

The focus is now turning to education within the field of Implantology but how does the busy GDP decide on an
appropriate pathway?

Should they be led by the marketing material of the pre-eminent companies, or individuals running courses based on their own training and experience? (usually sponsored by one of the major companies), or embark on a university-based course?

At first it may seem an easy question to answer but when one considers the complexity of the requirements of a suitable course the plot thickens.

The days of the weekend course are gone. This comprised of a practitioner being taught the mechanics of an implant system and then sent off to use it without learning the real fundamentals.

There would be no grounding in proper case assessment, treatment planning or the appropriate surgical and prosthodontic protocols.
There have been a great many articles written on the subject of education in oral implantology.

In 1999 a survey concluded that all university dental schools in the United Kingdom and Eire provided proper undergraduate teaching in oral Implantology, 13 centres provided informal postgraduate training and eight provided formal academic graduate training leading to recognised degrees and that opportunities for graduate training were limited.

More recently the president of the ADI Dr Philip Bennett further highlighted the lack of clarity, cohesion and direction that seems to presently abound.

In an article debating the need for a specialist list in implant dentistry, Peter Young, one of the authors of the survey, called for ‘greater transparency within the profession.’ He also called for ‘the development of a system ‘whereby patients can identify easily the varying levels of experience and training that their prospective implantologist possesses’.

Today increasingly more courses in implant dentistry are becoming available, that have been accepted by the GDC. These acceptable courses lead to an additional registrable professional qualification.

Most importantly, many of these courses have been structured in a way to accommodate the busy GDP. They are designed to help GDPs advance their careers without imposing too much on their busy practices.

As stated in BSOI literature membership levels are rigorously controlled, and there will be no shortcuts.

The GDC registrable qualifications have been set as a criteria for certain membership levels and this further emphasises the ethos of the Society i.e. Education, Communication and Integrity.

Dr Ken Nicholson, the founder of the British Society of Oral Implantolgy, has been involved with educating practitioners in Implantology for more than five years.

More recently, he has been involved with the GDC registrable Diploma and MSc. status.
