Brian Lux talks about his experience of the Great North Run

No pain, no gain was the philosophy of Jane Fonda in her aerobics exercise programme, that I was reminded of the, as I pounded the roads during the ill-fated Great North Run.

Now in my 74th year, my family was concerned for my health and wisdom in attempting to run to raise much needed funds for dentistry’s own charity – Dentaid. However, events were to show the validity of that concern as the day grew hotter and humidity rose.

On the route to the start, the sight was awesome; 50,000 runners and supports congregated at the start area, with a Geordie commentator maintaining a high tempo explanation of the day, interspersed with interviews with runners.

Then I came back to the masses and the Red Arrows and parachutists (Red Falcons) giving us an electrifying display, before we sang Jerusalem, organised by the sponsors N-Power.
‘Not long to go’, ‘you are doing well’, shouted the spectators as we crossed the river, but my best memory came at two miles. A young boy of about 10- years-old made us all laugh. ‘You’ve only got another two days to go’, he yelled.

As the heat increased, so the pace slowed, and the numbers of dropouts increased. The Red Cross and other medical services were very busy and ambulances roared up and down. Dehydration is a problem for me (having no colon) and as well as drinking from every water station, I carried my own runners’ bottle.

At nine miles, the heat was getting to me, and I was struggling, made worse by the need to find a portable toilet as my ileostomy bag was filling fast. I rejoined the race crowd after a long queue. Times was not a consideration: finishing was
the priority.

After 10 miles I was feeling lousy, my body ached and I was sweating heavily. Collecting my goody bag with a superb medal inside, I asked another tired runner to take a photo of me as proof I had run the race.

After phoning home I was shocked to hear of four deaths in the race. My children were understandably, extremely concerned when they heard the news, and relieved to know I was safe.

Now I am asking you to turn the title of this report ‘pain’ of my effort into ‘gain’ for Dentaid. Either send a cheque made payable to ‘Dentaid’ to my home address or use www.justgiving.com/toothlight; address 49 Abbey Road, Llandudno, Conwy LL30 2EH.
